Eb & Sparrow

About Eb & Sparrow:

Eb & Sparrow is a genre-defying, five-piece folk band that has been gaining attention across the country from city bars to folk clubs, festivals to house concerts. They have played with Rodriguez, Pokey LaFarge, Beth Orton, Wagons, Delaney Davidson & Marlon Williams, The Warratahs, Anika Moa, Tami Neilson, and Aldous Harding.

“We cast aching crescendoes of a time long gone, into a modern landscape” says singer and songwriter Ebony Lamb. Her impressionistic lyrics are imbued with a simple strength that comes from both heart and heartache. Her voice is unique – a cross between Cat Power and Gillian Welch and seems to resurrect an old-time soul into the here and now.

Lamb has worked tirelessly at her craft with a band that has grown organically around her. Lap-steel, trumpet and electric guitars swirl colourfully above solid and sensitive rhythm playing, moving effortlessly between a country shuffle, a Tex-Mex croon, and a hazy hooning workout.

“In these post-modem times, it’s easy to be suspicious of throwback folk music with vaudeville era aesthetics. Eb & Sparrow suggest not a yearning for an imagined brighter past, but a desire to participate in a simpler, more humanistic way of life.” – Martyn Pepperell, Vanguard Red Magazine.

The Eastern

About The Eastern:

The Eastern are a string band that roars like a punk band, that swings like a gospel band, that drinks like a country band, that works like a bar band, that hopes like folk singers, and sings love songs like union songs, and writes union songs like love songs, and wants to slow dance and stand on tables, all at the same time.

Whether roaring as their big six piece string band or swinging the loud lonesome sound as a three piece and averaging over 200 shows a year, The Eastern can hold it down in all settings for all comers.

Constantly on tour the eastern have played in every nook and corner of the good isles of New Zealand, and have broken strings and dented floors in parts beyond. From Papanui to Portland, Shirley to Switzerland, they’ve seen more than their share of stages, street corners and bars but treat any opportunity to hold it down and play as a gift and one they’d be fools to waste.

They play like they mean it, like its all they know how do…because they do and it is.

8 Foot Sativa

About 8 Foot Sativa:

8 Foot Sativa, named for the cannabis sativa plant, is a New Zealand-based heavy metal band formed in 1998. The band has toured and released albums internationally, and have played alongside artists such as Fear Factory, Soulfly, Korn, Slipknot, System of a Down, Children of Bodom, Disturbed, Motörhead, Pungent Stench, Shihad and Corrosion of Conformity.

Frequent lineup changes over the course of their career, including multiple changes of vocalist, have been accompanied by shifts in their style, which has ranged from thrash to death metal, sometimes touching on black metal as well. Even their most devoted fans find it difficult to agree on a single subgenre to fit their music. Despite this, many of those fans have stayed loyal to the band, making 8 Foot Sativa one of New Zealand’s most popular heavy metal bands.

Estère

About Estère:

She’s been compared to the likes of Erykah Badu and Kimbra, but Wellington-based singer, songwriter and beat-maker Estere Dalton is proving to be a one-of-a-kind performer.

Estère is a girl with an MPC she likes to call Lola. She produces all her own songs with Lola, mostly at home in her pajamas. Estère plays/records a mixture of bass, synth, drums, vocal harmonies, keyboard, whistles, claps, kazoo, desk tapping and anything else that might take her fancy then layers her production with pulsating rhythms and evocative melodies that adhere to the genre of Electric Blue Witch hop.

With Lola, Estère aims to create uniquecorn music that embraces a large variety of styles and leaves people guessing (herself included) for what will be coming next.
