Record Store Day 2015

And off we go tomorrow, to our happy place. Or happy places in fact, given that there are a fair few plans afoot to celebrate Record Store Day in various stores across New Zealand.

In addition to a plethora of delicious vinyl delights, great discounts, prizes etc. available in the various participating stores, there will also be opportunities to catch some great live sets.

Here’s a lowdown of what’s happening where and at what time in stores around Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and New Plymouth.

Southbound Records

132 Symonds St, Auckland

Southbound Records is celebrating with multiple special releases (over 250), and performances.
• 3pm SJD – celebrating his new album Saint John Divine on CD and LP.
• 4pm Delaney Davidson will be in store to sign copies of his limited edition LP Diamond Dozen which collates lost tunes, soundtrack gems, and stolen treasures from his last 10 years of recording.
• 4.30pm Don McGlashan will perform an acoustic set, marking the release of his new album Lucky Stars

There will also be free coffee and baking if you get in early enough.

Southbound Records Saturday April 18th Opening Hours: 9am-6pm.

Flying Out Record Store

80 Pitt Street, Auckland

What better way to celebrate Record Store Day than to open a record store?
To further celebrate Record Store Day, the Shayne Carter and Peter Jeffries collaborative 7” ‘Rudolph’s Going Home’ re-issue from 1986 will be available for purchase. Along with in store DJs.

Flying Out will be selling all your independent New Zealand music releases from Arch Hill Recordings, Flying Nun

Records and friends plus artists they like such as Aldous Harding, Little Bark and Bunnies on Ponies. Also on sale will be releases by the likes of Captured Tracks, Secretly Canadian and Spunk Records.

Go along and grab a pay-what-you-want coffee and join them to celebrate Record Store Day 2015 and the opening of a new record store in Auckland.

Death Ray Records

The team down at Death Ray Records have an epic day lined up that will keep the celebrations going well past closing.

• 2pm One-man band Mono-Sonic – with guitar and drums Mono will show you the true meaning of a blues bomb shell
• 3.30pm Surf-blues-rockabilly duo the Crunge for their special Death Ray tape release

Then, the party shifts to Newtown venue Moon, where rockabilly guitarist Connie Benson will be shredding things up with The Springolaters.

Two drum carnage supreme surf trash band The Dobermen will keep things barking into the night.

Show at Moon is $10 on the door.

Imlay will be dusting off a treasure trove of rare and collectable records from his vault and adding them to the shelves of his boutique store. “They are the ones I’d usually sell on eBay but I’ll put them out,” Imlay says. “The Darkroom will be open, too, so if anyone feels like a beer to toast Record Store Day, they can.”
