The Desotos

About The Desotos:

‘A powerful blend of rock-infused country blues.’

The DeSotos have cemented their place as one of New Zealand’s leading exponents of the Americana / country blues genres following the release of two albums that have been universally embraced by the critics.

2008’s ‘Cross Your Heart’ was voted Manu Taylor’s no 1 New Zealand album of the year, and the 2011 release ‘Your Highway For Tonight’ has received glowing reviews nationally and in the US.

Both albums have supplied the theme and continuity music to the TVNZ South and North series presented by Marcus Lush.

And their live show steps it up a notch further – 4 part harmonies, rootsy Gretsch guitar, Hammond organ with Leslie, and a rock solid rhythm section make for a tight and dynamic live sound that is as
exciting as it is unique.

Band members are:

Paul Gurney – lead vocals, guitars
Stuart McIntyre – bass, vocals
Ron Stevens – Hammond, keyboards, vocals
Michael Burrows – drums, vocals

Eb & Sparrow

About Eb & Sparrow:

Eb & Sparrow is a genre-defying, five-piece folk band that has been gaining attention across the country from city bars to folk clubs, festivals to house concerts. They have played with Rodriguez, Pokey LaFarge, Beth Orton, Wagons, Delaney Davidson & Marlon Williams, The Warratahs, Anika Moa, Tami Neilson, and Aldous Harding.

“We cast aching crescendoes of a time long gone, into a modern landscape” says singer and songwriter Ebony Lamb. Her impressionistic lyrics are imbued with a simple strength that comes from both heart and heartache. Her voice is unique – a cross between Cat Power and Gillian Welch and seems to resurrect an old-time soul into the here and now.

Lamb has worked tirelessly at her craft with a band that has grown organically around her. Lap-steel, trumpet and electric guitars swirl colourfully above solid and sensitive rhythm playing, moving effortlessly between a country shuffle, a Tex-Mex croon, and a hazy hooning workout.

“In these post-modem times, it’s easy to be suspicious of throwback folk music with vaudeville era aesthetics. Eb & Sparrow suggest not a yearning for an imagined brighter past, but a desire to participate in a simpler, more humanistic way of life.” – Martyn Pepperell, Vanguard Red Magazine.

Marlon Williams

About Marlon Williams:

Described as ‘the impossible love child of Elvis, Roy Orbison and Townes Van Zandt’, Marlon Williams is a 2-time New Zealand Music Award winning singer-songwriter touted by Rhythms Magazine as the ‘Artist To Watch’ in 2014.

Williams first came to recognition in New Zealand at only 17, fronting acclaimed alt-country band The Unfaithful Ways. They supported Justin Townes Earle and Band of Horses, featured on an internationally released Townes Van Zandt compilation and were nominated for the Critics Choice award at the 2011 New Zealand Music Awards.

Showing a willingness to push boundaries, Williams then joined Delaney Davidson for a series of duet albums titled “Sad But True – The Secret History Of Country Music Songwriting”, winning the New Zealand Country Album and Country Song of the Year in 2013.

Relocating to Melbourne in July 2013, Williams built a word of mouth following performing a 2-month residency at the Yarra Hotel and supporting the likes of Robert Ellis (US), Jordie Lane and Wagons. This culminated in packing out the Toff In Town for the release of his physical only, ‘Live at La Niche’ album.

The Eastern

About The Eastern:

The Eastern are a string band that roars like a punk band, that swings like a gospel band, that drinks like a country band, that works like a bar band, that hopes like folk singers, and sings love songs like union songs, and writes union songs like love songs, and wants to slow dance and stand on tables, all at the same time.

Whether roaring as their big six piece string band or swinging the loud lonesome sound as a three piece and averaging over 200 shows a year, The Eastern can hold it down in all settings for all comers.

Constantly on tour the eastern have played in every nook and corner of the good isles of New Zealand, and have broken strings and dented floors in parts beyond. From Papanui to Portland, Shirley to Switzerland, they’ve seen more than their share of stages, street corners and bars but treat any opportunity to hold it down and play as a gift and one they’d be fools to waste.

They play like they mean it, like its all they know how do…because they do and it is.

The Bads

About The Bads:

If you’ve never heard of Kiwi group the Bads, you’ve still heard of the Bads – it wouldn’t make any sense for a record this accomplished to come from nowhere. The core of the group is duo Dianne Swann and Brett Adams (formerly known as the Julie Dolphin).

The Bads have enjoyed an impressive musical history since, as The Julie Dolphin, they toured extensively in the UK, opened for Green Day, Oasis and Radiohead among others, clocked up strong memories of unique experiences (“seeing Frank Black in the audience when we played at the 100 Club in London” and “collaborating with Thom Yorke [Radiohead] on The Bends Sessions and playing keyboards on Street Spirit at the Astoria would have to be up there”). The band received accolades from the tough British music press for their album “Lit” and 2 EP’s.

Tami Neilson

About Tami Neilson:

Tami Neilson was raised in Canada, by parents with a closet full of sequined stage costumes and platform shoes.

She grew up in a house where amplifiers and guitar cases were just as much a part of the furniture as chairs and tables, and when most kids are still singing nursery rhymes in the bathtub, she was traveling across North America in a 34 foot motor home, performing professionally in her family band, The Neilsons.

Sharing the stage with the likes of Johnny Cash, Tami appeared regularly on television and radio, touring North America, promoting The Neilsons independent CD, releasing 2 top 40 singles on the Canadian music charts.

Then Tami met a boy who caused her heart to flutter and her feet to move to the other side of the world – New Zealand.

Buzzing with raw energy and talent, her music is a hybrid of acoustic torch and stripped-bare country blues. From haunting ballads of heartbreak and irony to foot-stomping, hand-clapping, harmony-infused numbers, Tami’s live performance is one to be remembered.

Tami has won numerous awards, including:

THE APRA SILVER SCROLL 2014

THE NEW ZEALAND MUSIC AWARDS ‘BEST COUNTRY ALBUM’ 2009, 2010 & 2011

APRA ‘BEST COUNTRY SONG 2014’

NZ COUNTRY MUSIC AWARDS ‘BEST FEMALE ARTIST’ 2010, 2011 & 2014

Bernie Griffen and The Thin Men

About Bernie Griffen and The Thin Men:

Founding member of The Grifters, Bernie Griffen has been front and centre of New Zealand’s music scene for nearly two decades, as long-time and well-loved host of 95bFM’s Border Radio show as well as performer and champion of independent Kiwi music.

A singer-songwriter with a powerful voice full of soul, humour and sadness, Griffen is a story-teller to the core, penning songs about characters real and imagined existing in a world of criminals and saints; dusty feet and wounded hearts. He draws influence from blues, from the country-rock of Gram Parsons and The Grateful Dead, the sharp-tongued lyrical wit of Bob Dylan, the mournful wails of Neil Young and outlaw country singers like Johnny Cash.

2014 sees Griffen step out into new territory with the record Salvation, recorded at Auckland’s The Lab studio with a star-studded back-up band The Thin Men, comprised of the formidable Chris O’Connore [The Phoenix Foundation, Trinity Roots, SJD and more], Mike Hall and Mathias Jordan [Pluto], and Jolyon Mulholland [Gasoline Cowboy, Mulholland] with Steve Roach [Bernie Griffen and the Grifters] and long-time partner/collaborator Kirsten Warner.

Albums

The new record ‘Salvation’ sings out like a scream in a quiet night — Bernie’s characters are hard-living and hard-loving, outlaw and saviour, the lover and the man in trouble — Bernie Griffen tells tales of adventure, loss and a life hard lived.

Bernie Griffen and the thin menIt’s a timely follow-up from 2011’s Everything So Far (Bernie Griffen and the Grifters) — which featured the song “29 Diamonds”, championed by Radio New Zealand’s Trevor Reekie in 2011: “If there’s any justice in this industry, “29 Diamonds” would win a Silver Scroll, it is achingly poignant and it will travel forever.”
