Moana and the Tribe

About Moana and the Tribe:

Long acknowledged for having consistently pushed the boundaries of Maori music in both her recordings and live performances, singer/songwriter Moana Maniapoto is a self-confessed political junkie whose lyrics are rooted in the NZ landscape, culture and experience – inspiring her to “produce her own blend of traditional and contemporary styles without compromising either (Graham Reid, music critic).”

Formed in 2002, Moana & the Tribe has played hundreds of stages in Istanbul, Moscow, Florence, Berlin, Warsaw, Toronto, Venice, Shanghai, Seoul, Vienna, Toronto and Taipei. They have taken their haka-funk-dub-fusion to the Herodus Atticus (Athens), Sydney Opera House (Australia) as well as to the Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland), Sziget (Budapest), Sarawak and Norway. The band performed in and around Glasgow 2014 as part of the “Boomerang Project” collaboration with Scottish and indigenous Australian musicians.

Moana is a recipient of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM), a Life Time Recipient of the Toi Iho Maori Made Mark (denoting authenticity and quality) and received the 2005 Te Tohu Mahi Hou a Te Waka Toi Award from Te Waka Toi (Creative New Zealand) in recognition of ‘outstanding leadership and contribution to the development of new directions in Maori art.’

In 2007, Moana joined four other outstanding artists who were made Art Laureates by the NZ Arts Foundation. The following year, Moana was honoured by the Waiata Maori Music Awards for her special contribution to the Maori music industry.

Reviews

“In the landscape of New Zealand music, one genre stands out: music by Maori artists, which is a solid cornerstone, and within itself powerfully diverse. One of the most distinctive, articulate and significant Maori voices is Moana Maniapoto who – first with Moana and the Moahunters and latterly as Moana & the Tribe – has taken her often politically conscious music to festivals across the world.” (Graham Reid)

The NZ Herald described Moana & the Tribe as “the most powerful, enjoyable and important act on the mainstage at Womad 2014 delivering a thumping, visually powerful and cleverly calculated implosion of waiata, haka and electronic-flavoured soul-funk.”

Fat Freddy’s Drop

About Fat Freddy’s Drop:

Fat Freddy’s Drop first emerged from the underground music scene of Wellington, New Zealand in 1999, jamming along to instrumental B-sides of funk, dub, house and hip-hop records dropped by DJ Mu (aka Fitchie) at parties and clubs around the capital.

The first studio album by Fat Freddy’s Drop, Based on a True Story, was the first independently distributed album to reach first place in New Zealand record sales directly after release in 2005, and is the highest-selling album by a national artist in the country’s history. Based on a True Story won Best Album at the New Zealand Music Awards the same year, and remained on the top 40 New Zealand sales chart for over two years, establishing them as one of the most successful contemporary bands in the country.

With international demand for the band at an all-time high, Fat Freddy’s Drop have plated up a definitive selection of the flavours they’ve served international audiences thus far. With over 800 shows in their career-to-date, clocking up over 450 appearances in Europe, almost 30 Australian Tours and over 300 shows in their homeland.

Freddys are still doing things in their inimitable way and still getting better and better. Writing, recording and performing is now a full-time thing and Freddys have resolutely remained independent with an unhurried approach.

The Black Seeds

About The Black Seeds:

Long established as one of New Zealand’s finest bands and with a solid foothold in Europe and North America, The Black Seeds have carved out their reputation on the back of mulit-platinum selling albums, and a masterful live show that has been filling dance floors across the globe for over a decade.

While firmly based in the island grooves that inspired the birth of the band over a decade ago, The Black Seeds’ sound casts a wide net, layering funk, soul, Afrobeat, and other eclectic elements over their dub/reggae foundations. It’s “contemporary groove music with influences from soul, funk and reggae rhythms – and even rock on the new album,” explains guitarist/vocalist Barnaby Weir.

Described recently by the German Rolling Stone as ‘The best reggae band in the world right now’, The Black Seeds supremely danceable live show infuses raw energy and good vibes wherever they go making the band a regular fixture at the world’s leading music festivals.

TrinityRoots

About TrinityRoots:

From the tail of the fish to the tip, Aotearoa was swept up in the music of TrinityRoots, a boil-up of ingredients that seemed to embody the very essence of our home, land and sea, and serve as an invocation to that same environment. The influences that the group brought together joined the dots between head-nodding reggae, slow-burning funk and jazz adventurism to form undeniably indigenous waiata, unconstrained by genre boxes.

After a triumphant return to the live stage in October 2010 with sold-out shows in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, an appearance at WOMAD NZ 2011, and their Australian live debut wowing audiences with a main stage performance at the prestigious Byron Bay Bluesfest, TrinityRoots looked to have embarked on a brand new phase of their musical relationship.

Music is choice – and TrinityRoots are crafting brand new material for Aotearoa to be swept up in all over again. Who knows where their adventures in sound will take us this time?

Ghetto Sunrise

About Ghetto Sunrise:

Ghetto Sunrise have been hailed as the New Face of New Zealand Drum and Bass, bringing you a fine fusion of drum ‘n’ bass, dubstep and live electronica.

Founded in 2013, band members are:

Joel C Blood – Guitars, Vocals, Synths, Programming
Josh Burke – Guitars, BV’s
“B-sey” – Bass, Synths

The band welcomes new guest member Emma Petera, who sings lead vocals on ‘Lost and Higher’ on their 2014 album.
