Blood Buffalo

About Blood Buffalo:

Blood Buffalo formed in Auckland in late 2014 when the brothers Caleb (Vocals/Guitar) and Nate (Bass) who are inspired by Wolfmother, Jack White, My Morning Jacket, and Led Zeppelin met Damien (the lead guitarist) who grew up on Pantera, Skid Row and Guns N’ Roses. They then finally met Stickman, Alexander who honed his chops listening to Black Sabbath, John Mayall, Deep Purple and The Rolling Stones.

As a result, Blood Buffalo have created a bluesy hard rock sound turned up to 11. Seeing them live is an experience –  high energy, unpredictable, and loud. This is Blood Buffalo.

Medusa Glare

About Medusa Glare:

MEDUSA GLARE are an exciting and powerful new rock outfit formed in Hamilton, New Zealand in 2014.

Combining contemporary sounds with hard hitting, old school rock, Medusa Glare deliver the perfect blend of groove and melody. Catchy hooks, driving rhythms and killer riffs are plentiful in their repertoire of exceptional original music.

Boasting a wealth of live and studio experience between the group’s members, Medusa Glare deliver a tight and powerful sound, befitted by super groups of the 70’s.

Rick’s powerful drum sound and style, combined with Si’s rich, warm, driving guitar tones, Jason’s powerful tenor vocals and Nathan’s driving basslines are reminiscent of a time when Rock n Roll was the undisputed king. While their sound’s roots lie in the golden era of rock, they are very much a band of today.

Band members: Simon Koretz – Guitar, Rick Walker – Drums, Nathan Waters – Bass, Jason Galu – Vocals.

Like A Storm

About Like A Storm:

Known as one of the hardest working bands out there, Like A Storm fought hard to be heard. The New Zealand brothers shifted to the United States knowing no one, and built a diehard and devoted fan-base by tirelessly touring to promote their debut album, The End of The Beginning with top acts such as Alter Bridge, Shinedown & Creed. In the midst of that whirlwind, the road served as the foundation for their forthcoming sophomore set, and first album for Another Century Records, Awaken The Fire.

While supporting Creed on a summer 2012 run, the band— Chris Brooks [lead vocals, guitar, didgeridoo, keys/programming], Matt Brooks [vocals, lead guitar, keys/programming], and Kent Brooks [bass, vocals, keys/programming]—would immediately retreat to either their dressing room or hotel after each show and begin recording new music until daybreak. This intense work ethic fostered a fertile creative spell for the boys.

“We were growing as a band and getting inspired by life on the road,” Chris explains. “We never stopped writing as we were touring. Our fans were hungry for new music, and we were hungry to put something out. We didn’t want to sit around and wait to see which label came knocking at our door. So, we decided to make the album ourselves, produce it, tour it, and preserve this awesome connection we’re lucky to have with our fans. We made a mobile studio rig and brought it everywhere.”

Cut on the road, their new hit single ‘Love The Way You Hate Me’ began to make waves on its own. Midwest radio station “The Banana” in Flint, MI started spinning it, and it eventually spent four consecutive weeks at #1, owning the station’s “cage match”. Organically, other stations picked up the track, such as KIBZ in Lincoln, adding it to regular rotation. Soon, Sirius XM’s rock station, Octane caught wind of it as well, and it seized #1 on their nationwide Big ‘Uns countdown for five weeks. The single eventually went Top 30 on the US active rock charts, a major achievement for a completely independent band, and making them the first New Zealand group to ever do so.

As ‘Love The Way You Hate Me’ exploded at airwaves, Century Media reached out and signed the group in 2014. They immediately jumped back into recording, converting a remote lake house in Michigan into a recording studio and self-producing Awaken The Fire. As a result of this approach, Like A Storm fully realized their sound.

“We’re making the music we want to make,” Chris exclaims. “There are no rules when we’re writing except the three of us have to love whatever we’re doing. We push it creatively. We love to see how far we can take things. That’s the sound of Like A Storm.”

“Musically, we want to inspire and empower people,” Chris leaves off. “We write songs about the things we feel strongly about, things that really matter to us. It’s amazing that we’ve made an impact. We came from the other side of the world, and we’re living our dream. If that inspires someone, that’s incredible.”

Valedictions

About Valedictions:

Valedictions are an Auckland based three piece Rock’n’Roll powerhouse.

On return from London in 2009 Valedictions went into the studio to work on their bag of tricks and released their first single Hey Lady. With a strong start to 2010 they secured a spot at the Big Day Out and the Big Night In with The Veils, Cairo Knife Fight and True Lovers. With numerous other performances throughout the year they also joined the Jordan Luck Band on the end of their NZ tour, impressing crowds with their full on live performance.

Their first single ‘Hey Lady’ was featured on the Rock FM ‘Off the Record’ segment. In 2010 they released their second single ‘Guilty Man’ which is undeniably catchy and radio friendly and was also featured on the Rock FM ‘Advanced Warning’ segment and other stations.

2013 found the band recording a further single produced by Andrew Buckton, ‘Come and Get It’; and released a music video for the song which aired on C4 for several months. ‘Come and Get It’ also got featured on the Rock FM ‘Off the Record’ segment as well as securing a Wildcard Chart spot on the theaudience.co.nz website.

Valedictions’ songs have also featured on some of Kiwi (OZ based) surf-filmmaker Craig Halstead’s surf compilation videos for Coastalwatch.com

With more time spent in the studio, and an EP release in 2015, Valedictions are looking to get back out there and continue causing hearing loss to more keen punters.

Hello Sailor

About Hello Sailor:

No one can challenge Hello Sailor’s place in the evolution of Kiwi music. They surfaced among the inner city student population in the midst of the 1970s disco boom, playing soul, Velvet Underground, Rolling Stones and their own distinctive brand of South Pacific Rock’n’Roll come ‘Ponsonby Reggae’.

Their debut self titled album released in 1977 was the first locally made New Zealand record to achieve Gold Record status and Hello Sailor had the country at its feet.

Hello Sailor’s contribution to the local music scene was recognised in 2011 by their induction into the NZ Music Hall of Fame. At an Auckland Town packed for the APRA Silver Scroll awards, Peter Urlich credited Sailor with being “the vanguard of a new wave of NZ artists in the late 70s that opened up a brave new world of original music and entertainment”, and that “they are still making their unique style of rock’n’roll as wonderfully as they did thirty years ago”.

Graham Brazier, Dave McArtney and Harry Lyon, the three founding members and songwriters, still performed and recorded together some thirty-seven years after the inception of the band in 1975. They recorded the critically acclaimed Surrey Crescent Moon album at Roundhead studios and released it through Warner NZ in October 2012.

As recently as November 2012 they were still hanging out the “House Full” signs on Dragon’s highly successful 40th Anniversary Tour playing to some 10,000 people at eighteen mainly theatre venues from Invercargill to Auckland.

The sad loss of founder member Dave McArtney in April 2013 left the remaining band members determined to carry the Hello Sailor flag. Guitar player Harry Lyon says the band is really looking forward to their summer tour, “We know Dave would want us to keep the band going and hey, it’s what we do.”

The Hello Sailor current line-up has founding members, Graham Brazier, and Harry Lyon joined by long-time drummer Rick Ball and Paul Woolright on bass, along with Stephen Small on keys (Autozam, Hammond Gamble Band) and Harry’s son Johnny Lyon (Luger Boa, The Psychs) on guitar.
