Tapfuma Gerald Munengami

About Tapfuma Gerald Munengami:

Well my name’s Tapfuma Gerald Munengami most people refer to me as Storm or Child Ether. I am a writer and a musician hence the aliases. I have been writing and making music since as far back as I can remember – most probably since I was about eight years old.

I have had an interesting life but when my father died, I went silent and was drawn to written words and music to express my emotion. Life has had its ups and downs, but I guess life is a school master and you can’t test a muscle or how much you have grown through time unless you go through the downs and still come up.

I try to make music and write to be positive, honest and sometimes to address truths society would rather sweep under the rug – like fatherless homes and society, racism, and love, I guess. I figure life’s about getting to know yourself because we are constantly changing. There are things I said I would never do that I have done, and when I did a life audit recently I wasn’t where I pictured myself when the dream first started. I take life in my stride and have a sense of humour about it.

I trust Jesus, live my life and try to be the best me I can be and, as I said, keep on discovering myself. I have no intention of being generic in this life time, I try my best not to judge people…. That’s about me, my life – anything else you want to know, just ask…. Stay blessed, Tapfuma.

I also have had the pleasure of making a free soundtrack for a short book. I hope you enjoy.

Tahuna Breaks

About Tahuna Breaks:

Tahuna Breaks have always encompassed a rich diversity of musical genres and styles. With seven members, the group’s live act is energetic, raw and large. It combines aspects of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s and is influenced by artists as varied as James Brown to Daft Punk. The band are well known for being unafraid to mix genres and have honed their sound on the live stage that encompasses funk, disco, soul, live electronics and roots.

Since inception, the band have gained momentum, focusing more and more on addictive rhythms that get audiences moving. They have an appetite for continuously progressing and pushing boundaries in their live performance, and audiences have already begun taking note of the band’s shift towards a sound that is bigger, darker and heavier.

Spiral

About Spiral:

Spiral has a groove. The groove is alive; it has soul, it has emotion, it can get hot and sweaty and it does not fear to get a little dirty.

Where soul meets samba, rock and jazz meet reggae, and horns rub shoulders with lush keys and broken strings, these are the places where Spiral unites.

Hailing from Auckland, on New Zealand’s picturesque West coast, you’ll be treated to soaring vocals, raging solos, a horn section that packs a phat punch from a collective of some of New Zealand’s finest musicians.

Members: Andrew Hall: Vocals, Saxophone, Ewi Finn Scholes: Trumpet, Juno Hamish Jellyman: Trombone, Percussion, MS2000 Anthony Hunt: Piano/Organ/Rhodes, Joel Vinsen: Guitar, Pedals Dave Hodkinson: Bass, Moog Chris Grant: Drums.

Moana and the Tribe

About Moana and the Tribe:

Long acknowledged for having consistently pushed the boundaries of Maori music in both her recordings and live performances, singer/songwriter Moana Maniapoto is a self-confessed political junkie whose lyrics are rooted in the NZ landscape, culture and experience – inspiring her to “produce her own blend of traditional and contemporary styles without compromising either (Graham Reid, music critic).”

Formed in 2002, Moana & the Tribe has played hundreds of stages in Istanbul, Moscow, Florence, Berlin, Warsaw, Toronto, Venice, Shanghai, Seoul, Vienna, Toronto and Taipei. They have taken their haka-funk-dub-fusion to the Herodus Atticus (Athens), Sydney Opera House (Australia) as well as to the Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland), Sziget (Budapest), Sarawak and Norway. The band performed in and around Glasgow 2014 as part of the “Boomerang Project” collaboration with Scottish and indigenous Australian musicians.

Moana is a recipient of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM), a Life Time Recipient of the Toi Iho Maori Made Mark (denoting authenticity and quality) and received the 2005 Te Tohu Mahi Hou a Te Waka Toi Award from Te Waka Toi (Creative New Zealand) in recognition of ‘outstanding leadership and contribution to the development of new directions in Maori art.’

In 2007, Moana joined four other outstanding artists who were made Art Laureates by the NZ Arts Foundation. The following year, Moana was honoured by the Waiata Maori Music Awards for her special contribution to the Maori music industry.

Reviews

“In the landscape of New Zealand music, one genre stands out: music by Maori artists, which is a solid cornerstone, and within itself powerfully diverse. One of the most distinctive, articulate and significant Maori voices is Moana Maniapoto who – first with Moana and the Moahunters and latterly as Moana & the Tribe – has taken her often politically conscious music to festivals across the world.” (Graham Reid)

The NZ Herald described Moana & the Tribe as “the most powerful, enjoyable and important act on the mainstage at Womad 2014 delivering a thumping, visually powerful and cleverly calculated implosion of waiata, haka and electronic-flavoured soul-funk.”
